When we look at the benefits of having a service like Beachbody on Demand, one of them is that you get new workouts from the Beachbody trainers all the time. Beachbody releases several programs a year, and when you have the On Demand service, you always get to try them. That’s great and I honestly love trying new things and challenging myself by working with different trainers. My current favorites are Core De Force, 21 Day Fix, PiYo, and Cize. I enjoyed LIIFT 4 and am excited to give Transform: 20 a try. But one of the other benefits of Beachbody on Demand is that older workouts like Slim in 6, and 10 Minute Trainer are also accessible – and you don’t have to keep your old DVD player or VCR to do them.

When I first signed up for the service, I was new to working out. I was a (slow but happy) runner and hadn’t added any strength training to my routine. Stuck in a rut and looking to make a change, I started exploring the different programs – and I found my “spirit” workout, and trainer, in Chalean Extreme. One of the things I love about this program is that she focuses so much on form in weight training. I really learned how to challenge myself and get the most from each workout by following her lead on form.

The program is 90 days and is broken into 3 phases with 3 strength training workouts in each. I decided to skip the cardio workouts and keep doing some running and only focus on the strength training workouts. The three phases are interesting:

    1. The Burn Phase – In this phase you use moderate weights that allow you to reach failure (meaning, I can’t do any more reps) between 10-12 reps. I started with basically 5 and 8 pound weights – maybe a 10 on lunges and squats.
    2. The Push Phase – This one really challenges you to push yourself to lift heavy. You use weights that bring you to failure between 6-8 reps. I struggled to push myself in the beginning of this phase but by the end of it, I could do some shoulder exercises with a 12 pound weight. And I was very impressed with myself.
    3. The Lean Phase – In this phase you increase the reps again and bring the weight down slightly, but add dynamic movements that involve a lot of combination exercises and engage the core. The exercises are challenging but this is where you really start to see a change in your overall shape.

I completed the full program in 90 days and saw a nice weight loss – it was a while ago so I can’t remember the numbers. But more than anything, the entire shape of my body changed. My arms were toned, my abs were tight, and my legs (still big) were toned and shaped. I felt strong and capable and mentally and emotionally, it changed how I saw myself. It’s a hard thing to explain if you haven’t done it, but lifting heavy weights like that does something to your mind and your self-confidence. My running improved too – although I still put myself in the slow, recreational group.

I really encourage everyone to give Beachbody on Demand a try and not just for the new workouts. If you sign up, take a look at everything they have. Try it all – and you just may find your “spirit” workout that changes you for the better.
